I guess the noise would be a burden but locales tend to get a big boost in buisness with any military base nearby.

250 support personnel and another 10 or 15 in pilots, right.
How much "burden" can an extra 260 or 270 people be?
kavikahi at 11:05 AM JST - 11th January
Why not offer some rides while they are here? A shot in the arm financially for the military without depending on war.

And where would you suggest a "rider" sits in a single-seat fighter like the Raptor? Think before you speak my friend.

Stealth bombers? How did they know they were coming? :P
martyman at 03:07 PM JST - 11th January
USNinJapan2 - Be nice, not everyone knows the characteristics of all the military planes. On another note, the business community will never complain about more customers coming on island and spending money.
I wonder what they mean by:
Go figure, money, noise, increased burden on hosting the base! These folks must not own any of the base property. Free rent money for those that do, and envy for those that don't.

Precisely why laymen like kavikahi should keep such unrealistic and ignorant comments to themselves. No?

I don't seem to remember whether the Community leaders took umbrage with the thousands of Self Defense Forces and thier dependents coming unto Okinawa. Frankly, I feel it is time for the forces from the USA to move their entire operation to the Marianas Islands. I know it will eventually happen; why not now?
Papawhale at 01:23 AM JST - 12th January
Why move it to the Marianas? Just send 'em back and close the 187+ USAnian bases around the Empire that's dying anyway. Hope it makes the Okinawan people feel safer to be an even bigger target now.
OssanAmerica at 03:13 AM JST - 12th January
That's because Okinawans consider themselves Japanese, as Okinawa is a prefecture. They have a different attitude towards "foreign" military.
Yelnats at 01:52 PM JST - 12th January
How were they spotted if they were stealth?

US Military is a burden to Okinawa and Japan.
YuriOtani at 05:59 AM JST - 13th January
0874569 the government of Japan can relieve the "burden" at anytime and order the American forces to leave as soon as it is possible and according with treaty. Of course the Japanese government would also be without the "burden" of making special payments and having special projects (pork spending) on Okinawa. Gate 2 and BZ street merchants will be out the burden of the Americans as customers and thousands of Okinawa people will be without the burden of a job on base. It gets better! Hundreds of landlords will be without the burden of American renters. Many of these are large and depend on the burdensome American to pay rent and thus mortgage to the bank. This many allow the burden of our two local banks to be removed by bankruptcy! The employment burden on Okinawa should be reduced by a large amount.oops need to refine, I can not see how you perceive the arrival of 6 aircraft as a burden to the Okinawa people. Please explain it to this country person.
