It sounds like a stpuid accident. a MSDF officer was on the fishing boat and the sub hit this boat. I don't get it.

Yikes, location miscalculation and communication problems, good thing it was training.

hoserfella -- you've got that right. A Japanese sub hitting a Japanese fishing boat is just an accident. A U.S. submarine hitting a Japanese fishing boat is an international incident.

I can imagine the Somali pirates capturing all the MSDF warships. Good to be a pacific country, but dont rely so much on the USA power.

I thought "drill" operations are carried out successfully in Japan. But seems drills may also bring thrills sometimes.

whats the excuse this time... idiocy at high sea?? perhaps they were at high tea?
borscht at 08:28 PM JST - 11th January
The Somalian pirates are shaking in their boots, now, let me tell you. If an MSDF officer asks to be on a pirate ship, should they accept or decline?
Re: US submarine sinking Japanese fishing boat: People DIED on that one; no one died here. The last time a MSDF ship KILLED a Japanese fisherman, the Japanese media was up in arms.

I am having trouble trying to accept the fact that a submarine is a defensive entity

Look out Somalian pirates! And hopefully jankers all round for the officers and men involved. But I doubt it.
