Starting on April 20, a special art exhibition featuring the works of death row inmates will open at the Tomonoura Museum in Fukuyama, Hiroshima. The prisoners have been sentenced to death but are unaware of when their sentence will be carried out. The exhibition, which contains paintings that were created during a grim time in each prisoner’s life, aims to answer the question, “Why do people express themselves?”

Approximately 300 pieces created by Sumi Hayashi, Ichi Kanagawa, Kou Okashita, Kazutoshi Takahashi, Masashi Hara and other condemned prisoners housed in single cell confinement will be on display. There will also be special talk events featuring editor Kyoichi Tsuzuki, art director Furamu Kitagawa, and neuroscientist Kenichirou Mogi. Those interested can sign up for the events at the official website.

This is a bit mawkish, and although I don't doubt for a second, the authenticity of the inmates artistic expression, making a "show" of "the condemned", complete with pinhead scientists to wax thoughtful, poignant observations, seems like playtime at Control Freak Central, Inc.

There are plenty of talented and yet undiscovered artists in Japan, is being condemned and/or under someone's thumb a prerequisite for interest?

I imagine pamelot it is not about finding undiscovered artists in japan so much as seeing what these ppl who are in a very very extreme situation that most of us can not even imagine have to say.

Mogi Kenichiro is the only scientist on the list, and he is very interesting, very smart guy who researches how the brain works. He is always worth listening to. The other two I don't know if they are pinheads or not, but they are not scientists. One is an art director and the other an editor/ photographer.

Every single person is in a situation no one else can imagine. That is why art, and self expression, exists.

uhh, yeah, ok, but some of us are more accessibly imaginable to each other than others. Death row is probably "extreme" and "unusual" for a lot of ppl. Anyway, just sayin'. I don't think this is about going out to find the next great "artists" or "art".
