Aussie group DMA's brings back nostalgic garage pop

Hailing from Newtown, a suburb of Sydney, Australia, is DMA’s. Widely known and compared as Australia’s answer to Oasis, Tommy, Mason and Johnny are a talented group with a sound that has a solution to bring back nostalgic garage pop. This is very similar to the Britpop sound made famous throughout the UK in the 1990s. In the midst of their tour of Europe, vocalist Tommy O’Dell had a few moments to chat about their upcoming show in Japan which will be the first time DMA’s will be venturing into the country.

With an EP and a single released under their name, DMA’s have had quite a hectic schedule for 2015. Among some appearances at U.S. festivals such as Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, the band have been traveling back and forth between Australia and the UK for some part of the year. O’Dell explains their reason for being on the road so much: “It is nice to see people enjoying our music. Our songs have been around for quite some time so it is great to finally get them out there to people.”

Between the touring, there has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes. Next year the band is set to release their debut album and it going to be another long and wild year ahead. The band has just released their first single "Lay Down" which has given fans an early taste of what to expect on the record. “'Lay Down' is about losing someone”, says O’Dell. “It is about finding someone else who is far better than you could have imagined. It is a breakup song and love song all in one.”

He continues further by explaining how the album is coming along. “There is a mix of old songs that we have had around as well as new songs. There will be similar aspects of the record that are similar to the EP but it will have more production elements involved. There are more expectations when preparing for an album but we try to just write songs that we believe in and not think about other things. I think people can over complicate things a lot when preparing for a debut album and that ends up being detrimental to your songwriting.”

While it is such a short stop in Japan, the band will continue focusing on preparing for their debut record, so surely they will be around longer next time. They will have plenty of more material to showcase when it is released in early 2016. They have told Japanese fans to “expect heavy guitar music with anthem like choruses.” O’Dell explains, “I wish we were staying longer in Japan. Everyone is really excited about the gig! I cannot wait to meet and hang out with local people, drink Japanese beer and eat sashimi!”

"Lay Down" is available now.
