Reality television is only compelling when it actually resembles reality. The third season of MTV's The Real World set the bar for good reality television.

How this muck gets made and why it is so popular is an enduring mystery. Honey Boo Boo/ Duck Dynasty? survivor? Ball room f....ing dancing? some gormless talent show. travesty of culture and entertainment.

But yet, reality television will continue in the USA for one reason: cheap production costs on a per hour basis. Scripted comedies and drama shows are expensive to produce, and why there are less and less of them on American TV in recent years. That's why in Japan, variety shows, travelogues, and cooking shows are common, mostly because the production cost on a per hour basis cheaper than scripted drama, comedies and anime.
