Japan Atlas A Bilingual Guide: 3rd Edition
Arts & Culture ( 11 )
This atlas, the only one of its kind to provide place-names in both English and Japanese, is an invaluable tool for foreign residents of Japan, and an indispensable, handy companion for travelers.
The atlas features:
• 21 large-scale maps of the regions of Japan compiled using digital satellite images, including Greater Tokyo and the Kanto area, the Greater Osaka Area, and almost all of the officially registered Japanese cities, towns and villages. There have been major changes in recent years, following a government policy to have many cities, towns and villages merge. This atlas includes all the changes.
• 19 maps of major metropolitan areas, from Naha in Okinawa to Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nagoya, Tsukuba, Sapporo, and many others.
• 7 maps featuring notable tourist and resort areas, including Fuji-Hakone-Izu, Nara, Kamakura, Nikko, etc.
• 8 transportation maps, including road and intercity railway maps, Tokyo and Osaka subway and rail maps, and even major domestic airline routes.
• 7 thematic maps, indicating natural parks, world heritage, special historic spots, Ramsar convention entry areas, ceramic kiln areas, and more.
• A comprehensive index.
• A list of embassies, consulates, and sister cities.

I always bring the Tokyo version of the Kondansha bilingual guide when I visit Japan and it's indispensable. In fact, I sometimes use it to point Japanese in the right direction.

I would love to have a copy of it. How do I order and what is the cost?

sam1633: Any Japanese bookstore in Japan or anywhere will carry it. Also, I'm sure Amazon and other websites too.

Do you often get Japanese asking you directions? In my many years here, I only had it happen once, and only because it was dark on the street and the guy didn't realize I was a foreigner before asking me :-/

These same folks published Tokyo City Atlas which I always carry around in my briefcase. However, it's all worn-out from years of use. They haven't printed a new edition since 2004. I also had the first edition from 1998.

maninjpn: I too have a "dogeared" copy of Tokyo City Atlas. Curiously, I was looking at a new printing in a bookstore and noticed that they added the Fukutoshin subway line to the map. So some minor changes, but yes they need to publish a new edition also. Tokyo has changed quite a bit in six years.

Amazon will sell it but it won't be available till Feb 2011. At least for US residents.

The price is ¥ 2,205. You can find it on Amazon Japan (amazon.co.jp) by going to 和書 (Japanese books, even though it's bilingual) and typing in Japan Atlas.
