There is a master art forger named Wolfgang Beltracchi who made millions from his forgeries and sold so many that it is thought he has single-handedly undermined the million+ dollar valuations of the high end classical fine art market.

So much so, that it is said that many people and even some museums and galleries are now afraid to have their collections tested.

He was only caught because he used a white paint that was no longer made where he would always use the correct chemical paint mix from the era the paintings were painted on all his other forgeries. He did so because the chemical required in the white paint was no longer available to the public.
