He must be cringing thinking about what will happen when he gets "My Number". Well his own My Number, not mine.

I doubt Murakami cares that his teenage reading list has been made public. He is probably more interested in it than anyone!

nowadays a perennial contender for the Nobel literature prize

There is no released list of "contenders" for the nobel prize. The results of who they are considering aren't released until 50 years after being selected (the newest available on the Nobel site is 1964).

No offense to Murakami as a person or a writer, but it is very rare that an writer of entertainment-fiction wins the Nobel.

Moreover, if we look at all works of entertainment out there, I would say there are FAR more alternative works that have had some kind of impact on society. The Harry Potter series, love it or hate it, has had MUCH more effect on the world than, say, Kafka by the Sea.
