Name the flick "The Iron Lady"; a name Ms. Thatcher earned in her long, political career, then focus the film on her personal weaknesses, making a mawkish, weak portrayal of a woman whose career help shape the times...

    Typical Hollywood-leftist twaddle.

You can't do battle with Ms. Thatcher on equal ground; telling her story of a career in a man-dominated field, her rise to power, her conservative ideals- So go below the belt, focus on her perceived weaknesses, long after her career achievements, just to "make it more human".

Meryl Streep should have declined this. How great she could have been, with a better screenplay.

He, too, argued that the film sought to portray Thatcher as something she was not, saying she was "not a satisfactory feminist icon. She could have promoted women... But didn't."

    Ignorance, they name is Liberalism.

She promoted her ideas, and herself. She did not wear her femininity as a badge, she just did her job- Extremely well.

If that is not a satisfactory women's role model, what is?

I think it would be highly unlikely that a left leaning actress/studio could portray a right leaning conservative icon, without any kind of disrespect, intended or otherwise.

The same goes the other way around. No politics, just extremely hard to play somebody who is on the opposite side of the political spectrum without injecting some inherent disrespect.

Sigh... this forum, like those on many of the web sites of UK newspapers, is bound to end up with some political mud slinging and very little said about the movie. I could start it by completely disagreeing with everything pamelot says & saying that Thatcher deserves no respect at all - but I won't.

If you want a movie about what Thatcher did to the UK, watch "Brassed Off", if you can find it. Pete Postlethwaite alone will make it worth the effort. Can't say what you'll get if you see La Streep, as I haven't seen it & don't plan to. I would much prefer all memories of the Thatcher years to be as dead and buried as she herself soon will be. OK, I need to go lie down in a dark room now.
