My guesses: 30 to 40-yr old jazz lover, shops food at Kinokuniya, likes to prepare food himself, no kids, some juicy woman carrying brand name clothes enters his life, they have steamy sex, and some fantastic non-realistic stuff happens.
Oh dang, EUgirl just nailed every single novel this guy wrote after Norwegian Wood. Unfortunately nowadays this scenario also includes pages and pages about what it's like to jog.

Even if they knew what the novel is about they would have bought it anyway. That's what fans do, so no surprises here.
And how are you supposed to know the contents of a book that you haven't read yet? Murakami is a bestseller, he can even publish a manga and it would sell as well.
I wonder how many people is buying this just because everyone else is doing it.
Kosuke grew up in the trendy suburb of Ashiya..his main source of joy in life was his John Coltrane LP collection, the occasional cup of espresso as he wrote his articles for the Kobe Shimbun and talking to the myterious, seductive Ruka from next door, who he had met whilst feeding the stray cat (he had named it Nietchse) that liked to hang around on their shared balcony. One day,as he lit up the last of his Lucky Strikes and finished off the glass of Henessy he had woken up next to that morning,he noticed that Nietchse had killed a snake and was toying with it outside Ruka's door....
ahem..yeah I think I could easily enough ghost-write a Murakami book.LOL

"In a clever marketing scheme, the contents of his new novel have been kept secret."
But I bet the main character will be a young guy loving jazz.

"I forgot the cat."
That woman is older than the main character, btw.
Now, how about the title "1Q84"? I have a feeling we can re-write this novel without ever having read it!

people have said it could be Murakami's 'biggest and most ambitious' novel, so it seems interesting
