Oh, no! I bet the claims were made by foreigners too. I had a student tell me thses problems with Toyotas was just cooked up by the US to discredit the Japanese car companies. Mind you, this was after the recall was implimented in Europe.

Maybe the student had mad cow on his mind?

There is no such thing as "100% defect free". Mass produced parts will always have a failure rate.

About as sharp as most Japanese drivers I've seen. They actually accelerate before slamming on the brakes where I live.

Well, one can hope that the two defects do not intersect. Faulty brakes plus stuck accelerator = not a happy day.
By the way, why do people buy hybrids? They incur higher energy input and toxicity (and enviro disruption mining the heavy/rare earth metals for the batteries) in their manufacture than they save over a lifetime, versus standard ICE vehicles?

Jeez, not good. Will we find out this is a design issue?

Yup! I knew it would happen. But Toyota is not worried about it in Japan because Japanese people won't even think about suing (and those that do won't find a lawyer capable of going against a big corporation).

This is impossible! Japan is Safety Country!

It says brakes. You can always ask the garage to adjust the brake if you feel it unresponsive. I had that done on my old Acura in a small garage. It only took them 10-15 minutes. The person was nice to do it for free as well.
Also, you can always shift to neutral when accelerator stuck.

It is a symbol like a rolex watch. And what do they say about symbols? "Symbols are for the simple minded". Go figure.

It is wrong to think that Toyota has always been a stronghold for trouble-free manufacturing and design. Four years ago the Japanese Government publicly ordered the Toyota to improve the quality of its vehicles after dozens of accidents of its Hilux Surf cars as the steering locked. As usual consumer memories turned out to be short and the myth of Japan takes over.
Although, today's sales figures show that Mercedes nearly overtook the long term champion in the US for luxury cars: Lexus. So the gigant is not unfailable.
