Aeon has taken advantage of production in China to lower the price, as Fast Retailing has done.
Yes, there's a word for this: coolie wages. Keep squeezing them, I'm sure you can get jeans down to 480 yen if you use N. Korean made zippers and thread.
I wish there was this kind of price competition in all industries in Japan. (Home electronics, especially.)
Maybe you weren't around here in the 1970s when a video deck retailed for around 300,000 yen. Now, more than 30 years later, they go for one tenth of that price, just like the jeans. That says something about price erosion and competition. I can give many more examples, but probably this is not the place. I will check out the quality of the jeans (I like Topvalu products) and maybe buy some.
Amen, Presto.
I will never ever forget getting to Tokyo as a student and searching the city for a TOWEL for less than 4000 yen. I cannot remember how I solved that problem, but I think I had so settle for one of those tiny non-absorbent things for 1000 yen or whatever it was.
Things have changed. They are not going to be Levi's, but vive la difference. If Chinese people can make a buck, so much the better.
