Ongoing and constant training for emergencies really make a huge difference in pilots' abilities and confidence as well as remaining calm during an emergency.

Regarding the last Air Asia crash, they had to fly through one of what was a series of very bad storms in the region that week. Storms at that strength have very unpredictable characteristics, the most dangerous and common being air pressure (density) fluctuations followed by downdraft microbursts.
