Great Something else to raise the price of airline tickets. Do airplanes produce so much pollution? Is it comparable to the amount of pollution created by vehicles? Can airplanes be retrofitted so they don't pollute as much? Just wondering.

the head of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) warned that several nations view the EU scheme as an “attack on sovereignty”.

That sounds more like some countries who do not want to see a precedent in the world attack the fiscal sovereignty of European states. When you fly to/from European airports you have to pay this "tax". Pass it on to passengers who are flying on these routes and that's it. In which way does the EU attack the sovereignty of China or the US?

airplanes are not like cars with exhaust & catalytic converters, the only way to retrofit an plane is change its engines for newer ones but the cost for doing this is very high so it probably cheaper to buy a new plane with lower emmissions eg 777 dreamliner, A380
