ow thinking of all of this I do not want to see Japanese hospitality be taken down by corporate greed.

From what I've read so far (in WSJ and Bloomberg), I don't expect JAL to jump ship to play ball with Delta. Too many regulatory issues could derail such a venture. Delta is already the largest airline, and if JAL were to join Delta there would certainly be an appearance of a monopolistic environment for Pacific routes from the USA to Japan and China. I see AMR sweetening the pot (behind closed doors) to keep Shuta Saito happy, and to avoid loosing a major money making route to its direct competitor.

The quality of the service and amenities on all the US carriers has been declining for decades. People still seem to entertain the naive idea that long-distance flying carries is supposed to be an experience reserved for the bourgeoisie. If one looks at one's fellow travelers crammed into steerage, it's quite evident that the Boeing 747 has taken on the function of a Greyhound bus with wings.

I don't think that either Delta of AA understand that now is not the time or the place to start the bidding.

In addition, I could not agree more with caraphat's second comment, "Time for the J-govt to put up the dough or be run by gaijin.A JAL negotiating tactic." You do have to ask, "if I hold something this valuable, why would I see it for such a low premium without trying to reorganise it myself?"

I do think that AA is a quality American-brand, but it is just that: American. Not Japanese.

Also, we cannot discount that what this story is really about is access to Haneda, which is what all carriers want. Domestica capacity must be be a concern, and JAL and ANA's role in that capacity is important.

I see a change in the AA language as well. Asking for "an invitation"- which is a far cry from the more threatening language of a week ago where AA would use every legal tool to oppose a DL/Skyteam move. The irony of that being that it is the same fould they claim against Virgin when it opposed AA/BA.

Its more a case of who do they take US cash from, tweedle-dum or tweedle-dee. AA & Delta are both crap airlines.

Funny I thought all the US airlines were hurting for $$$$ look for their unions to be raising a stink after having been forced into salary cuts etc only to find out they are flush enough to bid for JL!

Delta has US hubs in Atlanta and Salt Lake City. JAL flies from Chicago, San Fran, LA and NY. So...tell me again how Delta is going to feed JAL passengers????

Got news for you, plane's expenses go up as weight does. You have extra luggage over the limit? You have to pay to have it loaded. Should be the same for that extra lard your lugging around. Im not for the airlines nickel and diming everyone, but the guy who takes up 2 seats should pay for two seats.

This seems to be a bit OT, but I couldn't agree more!

I love it! Let JAL ply Skyteam against Oneworld! Gosh, those at the top of JAL are not as stupid as I first thought!

  • L4dymercury at 11:34 AM JST - 9th December

Ikedunne: You forgot all the NWA hubs that have just be "converted" to Delta hubs due to the merger.
