Haven't seen many Hummers in the street lately.

And, I wonder what the discussion about fuel prices at the G-8 summit has achieved in regards to reducing the prices. Gasoline prices have doubled in the last four years.

Serendipity, today on 8 July, a barrel of oil went down 5 American bucks.

Don't worry. Your American economy is doin' so much better than the Euros.

If you think an average of 4 bucks a gallon right now is bad, just ask someone from Japan, England, France or Germany how much they're payin' the equivalent of one US gallon.

These same nations have been gettin' hosed for years... and years.

-But it has little to to with "OPEC" and a whole lot do do with bein' a socialist society. They chose to screw themselves and pay up to three times what you and I pay per gallon. And they have little to show for it... poor public education, homelessness, violence, broken families...

All many of them have to show for all of this is an arrogance and bitterness towared your homeland, America.

Google 'crab bucket theory' and you'll know what kind of sadsacks you're dealin' with.

Under the skin, they wish they were you.

    uhmm - in california its 4.85 a gallon - not "4 bucks".

  • USARonin at 07:23 PM JST - 9th July

BeeTee, the median price of gasoline in California as of today is $4.55 includin' taxes:

That's the median price which means it's easy to find it a a lot cheaper in your area. If you're payin $4.85/gallon flat out, you need to find an adult like your mom or day who can help teach you the value of a dollar and shop smart. Don't be embarrassed. It's all part of grownin' up and a bunch of your fellow Americans learned how to do it.

Either way, look at Europe and Japan. You win.

The higher the better, quite frankly. Anything that reduces consumption is good. The environment is far more important than being able to drive long distances.

  • rajakumar at 09:05 PM JST - 9th July

Agree with bovinus, higher the better. We can't let people damage the enviroment so cheaply.

The enviroment and nature feeds the world, people need to realise cheap high pollution energy, needs more deterrents.

Hydrocarbon energy should not be made cheap to increase pollutions.

The money from more taxes on hydrocarbon energy industry, should be used to fund new sustainable, enviro-friendly energy techs.

I can find it at $3.75 a US gallon (about 3.8 liters) here in Tucson, I'm not complaining...yet. Gas is even cheaper in Mexico, but I'm a little apprehensive about putting that freak juice into my car (rumored that the gas at the border in Mexico at $2.75 a US gallon isn't refined very well - almost like diesel).

Once again don't forget that 30 yen of that is the re-instated tax courtesy of your friends at the LDP

  • usaexpat at 11:48 PM JST - 9th July

Bovinus and Rajakumar that's fine thinking here in Japan where there is reasonably good mass transit but neither of you have ever been to America to make that comment. In America there are simply huge stretches of country that you can't cross anyway but driving. Beyond that your comments reek of a desire to limit individual freedom which driving certainly is one. Do you think the wealthy will change their habits or really care what happens to the poor and middle class? The rich are probably happy as well as a drop in consumption by average people protects their supply.

  • ThomasMyk at 12:20 AM JST - 10th July

here in the Netherlands we pay about 280 yen per liter standard gasoline (octane content 95 ) so be happy with your 181,5

  • Himajin at 12:23 AM JST - 10th July

While you get warm fuzzies thinking that high gas prices are going to force people to stop driving so much and so help the environment, don't forget all the produce and other foods that are delivered nationwide by truck. Food prices are rising because of increased transportation costs, it really isn't a great thing.

Gas in my neck of the woods went to 188 yen/liter this past weekend...ugh.

  • Himajin at 12:24 AM JST - 10th July

    280!? Wow!

  • pointofview at 11:58 AM JST - 10th July

I thought the price of oil dropped $6. Interesting...

I thought the price of oil dropped $6. Interesting...

You're right, but it bounced up again on fears that Iran is about to be blown off the face of the earth. Crude now $147 plus. Time to become a Sunday driver.

America will suffer as it lacks the densities to support mass transportation.

If 181.5 yen is the average, does anybody know the top price and where?

Why does everyone quote California's price? I would guess Hawaii has the highest in the U.S.
