Why is this news? Because the way Japanese companies pay bonuses (give you 12 seventeenths of your salary on a normal month then 2.5 times extra at Christmas and summer) and the bubble guys (those on bigger base salaries) are retiring the average bonus will go down. Simple maths - ne?
HA!
I cannot in any way feel sorry for these guys. Up until this year, I have received a bonus of 1/3 of my monthly salary. Not twice a year, not a christmas bonus, not a summer bonus. . but a "end of the fiscal year" bonus. And from next year, that bonus is being cut in half! So, instead of the big, fat bonuses I have heard about for the past few years...I am getting. . well, not much. 1/6 of my monthly salary. (And of course, can't forget that the total mentioned is BEFORE income tax! Last year was barely over 8 man yen!! So next year will be around 4 man yen..BIG MONEY!) WooHoo! (If I got a bonus equal to just one month's salary, I would be absolutely thrilled...as is. . my bonus this year was LESS than the price of an airplane ticket...next year's MIGHT pay for a weekend trip to Tokyo...)
So, for all those guys whining about their measly 840,000 to 930,000 yen bonuses. . WAAAHHHHHHH. . .I cannot feel even a little bit sorry for you.

NagoyaGaijin - I guess not a large percentage of gaijin in Japan get the 2.5 times monthly salary bi-annual bonuses.
