TOKYO —
Barneys Japan Co is considering opening an outlet of the Barneys New York department store in Fukuoka in a few years’ time, sources familiar with the matter said Saturday. The new outlet of the upscale department store will use floor space rented in a commercial building in the Tenjin shopping and entertainment district, the sources said.
Barneys Japan is looking to draw shoppers from a wide range of areas on Kyushu because the Kagoshima route for the Kyushu Shinkansen Line will be completed in 2011, connecting Kagoshima, its southernmost major city, with Fukuoka in the north, they said. Barneys Japan operates three stores in Tokyo’s Ginza and Shinjuku shopping districts and in Yokohama under a license from Barneys New York Inc.

Why is this newsworthy? A chain with 3 outlets looking to open a 4th does not seem to be anything on the radar.

"What's Barneys??? Never heard of it."
This reminds me of the posters who said they never heard of Richard Branson.

Barney as in Rubble? (the Flintstones) I completly agree with flamingwaver, Japan needs more COSTCOS! Here in Tokyo, we have to go all the way to bloody Machida, or out to Saitama, or even worse out to Yokohama! This is a disgrace, even Mexico has more Costcos than Japan!

"Japan needs more COSTCOS!"
It does not. Japan needs some WalMarts and Targets.

Japan really needs more outlets for cheap, toxic chinese-made crap? There are dollar stores all over the place. Cheap is cheap.
Moderator: Back on topic please. The subject is Barney's.

There is a Costco near Fukuoka, a Barneys would be a great addition to Tenjin as it would help to continue drawing shoppers from overseas. Shopping tourism is an important part of Fukuoka's economy.

Barney's should make it in Fukuoka, hell they have a Frank Mueller boutique. You can pretty much find anything you could find on 5th Avenue in Fukuoka.
