Bookoff to buy DVD rental chain

TOKYO —

Bookoff Corp, a Japanese secondhand book store chain, said Monday it has reached basic agreement to purchase YCC Co, a CD and DVD rental unit of supermarket chain Yaoko Co. Bookoff plans to buy all outstanding shares in YCC from Yaoko and the founding family on Sept 30.

YCC operates 22 Tsutaya-brand franchise outlets and another store, mainly in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo. Through the acquisition, Bookoff intends to boost its business, while Yaoko plans to focus on its mainstay supermarket operations.
