Burger chain Shake Shack to open second store in Japan this spring

Popular American burger chain Shake Shack is set to open its second store in Japan this spring, following the success of its first store which opened last autumn, The Sazaby League, the chain’s management company in Japan, announced in a press release.

The second store will be located at the new Atre Ebisu Nishikan shopping mall, expected to open near Ebisu station in Tokyo’s Shibuya ward this spring. The restaurant will feature a brand new design “fit for the Ebisu area,” that differs from the chain’s first store on Gaien Icho Namiki Avenue, the company said.

Details regarding the exact opening date, address or interior have not been released yet, though the menu is expected to be the same as the first store.

Shake Shack, the New York-born modern day “roadside” burger famous for its 100% all-natural, antibiotic-free Angus beef burgers, opened its first store in Japan on Nov 13 last year.

The store became popular among Japanese consumers, with over 400 people lining up for the opening day only. Two months on, the lines in front of the store do not seem to be any shorter despite the cold weather, at times requiring over an hour of waiting, especially on weekends.

Out of all the burger chains in Japan my own personal favourite is freshness burger. All these burger shops have there own special menu but freshness burger uses fresh ingredients and cooked on a grill not cooked from frozen.

Junk foods junk food but using fresh ingredients and made in house makes all the difference.

I've been by that place 10 times at least and the line is always down to the end of the block. What gives ? There are numerous American diner- type restaurants all around that area where you can just walk right in on most days and are way more delicious. Avoid the chains, buy local !

Remember the extremely long lines at CrispiCream dounuts when they opened? Now there are no lines at all. You won't have to wait long before the lines in front of Shake Shack dissapear. That is how Japanese consumers are. And look at the condition McD's is in, and they make huge efforts to vary the menu.

Brand obsessions still survive it seems. There are probably a dozen better and cheaper burger joints with no lines nearby, but everyone wants to try the new brand from New York. I would be embarrassed to be seen waiting in lines like this for a simple hamburger.

Most like another fade joint most have no queues after 6 month.

Kichijoji is often where the 1st store opens like Cinnabon, Hara Donuts, etc initially long queues and the stores often close after 6-8 months.

That's just asking to get sick. Rare steak is one thing, but with an undercooked burger, potential pathogens have been ground into the center of it.

You're not going to find a better burger in Japan. Order one with a double patty to get the full blast of beefiness.

Lots of Japanese burger chains rely on thick sauces to offset the lack of taste (and that goes for wagyu as well).

As for "junk food," where do guys draw the line? Tako-yaki? Tai-yaki and donuts? Ramen? Not junk food? Well then, if so, you're letting your cultural chauvinism get in the way of identifying the true meaning of "junk!"

Best Burger depends on individual preference.

Generally I don't like Chain Burgers except Zad:s, Village Vanguard and prefer places where I can order custom Burgers made and cooked to my specifications.

Like I heard Krispy Kreme was good, threw mine into the trash after 2 bites.

Blacows near Ebisu station is amazing! They have some of the best burgers I've ever had (States included).

ok the chain is new and all that but I never understand people who stand in lines for food here in Japan, where there is such a diversity of restaurants per square meter. I never wait in lines. Can't have a burger today? Will go for that pizza right across the street.

When the "Boiling Crab" first opened up chains in southern California. The lines and waiting times were insane, but well worth it. It is still the same today.

There will never be a BC in Japan though. The Japanese just won't understand Cajun style seafood and the sloppy manner / mess that goes along with eating it.

When I was last in NYC there was a long line for Shake Shack there too.

Why not bring one to Kansai? Plenty of fast-food eaters here.

I dropped by one day when I happened to be in the area and there was only a 20 minute wait. Not worth it for me. I prefer Kua-aina, where the wait is 5 minutes at the most.

Good food but not fast and not cheap neither. Yet people still wait with long lines even in NY, so it's not just Japan in this case.

Rare burgers are not recommended for the reason you mention (and most restaurants/fast food chains will refuse to serve it), but medium rare burgers have a center temperature of 145°F (62.8°C).

I have yet to try a Shake Shack. I haven't come across one nearby.
