From an article in the New York Times, Chen Deming the commerce minister:

"denied then that his country had imposed an embargo on rare earth exports, suggesting that entrepreneurs in the industry had decided on their own to stop sending shipments to Japan because of their personal feelings toward Japan. He did not explain, though, why all 32 foreign-owned and domestic rare earth exporters in China stopped shipments to Japan on the same day."

China withholds rare earth and somehow Japan becomes a WHOLE lot more polite.

    Hilarious.

Japan, good luck in finding rare earth somewhere else.

“The basic goal is to protect the environment,” Yao said.

Yeah since when does China care about anything related to the environment?

"an article in the New York Times,"

Thanks Paul. You know what gets me? The NYT was the paper that originally broke the story and they NEVER retracted. Which says to me, knowing the credibility of China and the NYT, that everyone is trying to cover things over and play nicey, but China did it. They might plausibly deny it, but they did it.

Mushroom. Try this sometime. Go to a friendly poker game and play for about an hour. Then when you make a bad move and lose a hand or two, take out a loaded pistol and set it down next to your chips. You will see what polite is. Of course, win or lose, it will get a little harder to find poker buddies after that. Same thing. What people know now is that as soon as it is in their interests to let China hang, they will do it. Remember the Beijing Olympics? Seems like 50 years ago now. Six months ago everyone wanted China to succeed. That certainly is not the case now. PR in China only means People's Republic.... nothing else.

    Klein2,

Very good analogy. But I think it applies more to the countries on financial life support from the Chinese, like Western Europe and the United States. If they were not begging for Chinese money to help solve (or prolong) their financial mess, then they would let China hang, indeed.

The majority of the 3rd world still very much wants China to succeed (minus Vietnam and India).
