So either way, the cars produced are non-American?

In the nineties, before being taken over by Daimler Benz, Chrysler looked at Nissan as a possible tie-up partner. They took a step back when they saw the debts Nissan had accrued at that time.

Now with Chrysler on its uppers, I wonder if this joint venture is a prelude to a Renault/Nissan takeover? After all, Chrysler's venture capitalist owners will want to out the business to someone fairly soon and it's an obvious candidate for anyone wanting to expand their US market share.

Mitsubishi Motors supplied the Colt to GM for years. US automakers could build good compact cars if they wanted to -- I remember the old Nash Metropolitan, Rambler and Studebaker Lark.

The colt was a chrysler product built by Mitsubishi, so was the Conquest, the spirit, the acclaim, and the mmotor/transmision in the caravan.. but not Gm... Gm was in joint with GEO beofre they bought them out. I owned a 63 Lark it had a stud 289 v8 in it, nice car. My favorite odd car I have owned was my hudson hornet.... now a days the American car is equal to or better then Japanese cars on the market... Korean cars are the leaders in the warrenty game and have created cars that survive the whole 10 year warrenty now..

Been in the industry for 22 years in Europe, the US and Japan, 7 working for a US maker based in Tokyo. The accepted wisdom is still that Toyota produce the best product overall. In my experience US cars still dont even come close. That said, if you can accept the obvious flaws there are some fun things to own. The Chrysler 300C is a cracker!
