Co-ops to launch domestically made frozen foods

TOKYO —

Co-op Net, a network of eight co-operative unions in eastern Japan including Tokyo, will launch a line of frozen foods made in Japan with domestically produced ingredients.

The use of domestically produced ingredients such as meat, vegetables and flour is a response to growing concerns over food safety in Japan following a food-poisoning scare involving Chinese-made frozen dumplings.

The packaging will clearly show where in Japan the products and their ingredients are made. The eight new products will be available to co-op member customers via home delivery from Aug 11.

unprofitable business venture, only source of profit is China, so naturally they will depend on 'mislabeling'.

39% food self-sufficiency, I'm a tad skeptical about the real origins of this produce!

Cynicism aside, it is at least it's a step in the right direction. Food safety should be a concern to everyone. Also, some energy might be saved on the fuel needed to import foodstuff from outside Japan.

Heck!! You want safe foods, buy some good ol US Beef and and goodies at Costco.

If the mak frozen food with only Japanese products, the price will be double the price the other stores sell foe, so no sales!!!

Great post, i agree with you entirly.

The food cannot be commercially viable using expensive Japan only ingredients.

Awareness about food safety is growing and more and more people are wary and suspicious about everything cheap, especially when it has been imported and the origin is fuzzy. I'll happily pay double if I am convinced it is safe.

Thank you Co-Op and before anyone asks the question, yes I will pay more for domestic product.

usaexpat; Thedn you have been duped into believing Japanese products are safer. They are not. Hygiene and health standars are very low in Japan. Co-op are trying to make a quick buck out of folks who believe the lies of the Japanese media.

USAPatriot, health and food standards are a lot higher here than most countries I've been to. Certainly the equal of the US. You will admit that Japanese products are far safer than Chinese products?

Uh-huh. We've all been brain washed, including you, and we still believe in fairy tales. I check the labels, and when they say '国産’ or mention the prefecture, I buy in preference to imported produce, but I allow for exceptions, according to my common sense or knowledge :-)

presto345 we are of similar habit, I try to buy things produced as close to home as possible. There's a lot of countryside here in Nagasaki so local products are often available. Beyond that we are friends with some farmers so we get most of our veggies fresh from the producer.

Next we'll have American-style TV dinners too.

Doesn't matter that they'll start looking at domestic grown ingredients for frozen foods; most of it will be mislabeled anyway.
