Dairy firms to maintain higher butter output
TOKYO —
Four major Japanese dairy companies will maintain an increased level of butter production in June to relieve supply shortages. Morinaga Milk Industry Co President Koichi Furukawa said Monday that the company is preparing to continue with higher output in June as the agriculture ministry has asked the company to do so through the end of March 2009.
Meiji Dairies Corp President Shigetaro Asano said that the company is set to continue with increased production in June. Furukawa and Asano made the comments at a promotional event hosted by a dairy industry group.
The agriculture ministry asked Meiji Dairies, Morinaga Milk, Snow Brand Milk Products Co and Yotsuba Inc in April to increase butter production.
The four firms last month boosted their combined butter output by 230 tons, which are equivalent to about 20% of monthly consumption in Japan.

higher output higher price unique business practice in Japan. Anyway, problem is 'bread and butter' not butter alone.

Panic nipped. As long as butter AND olive oil are not both in short supply, I can manage.

What can justify a mark up of almost 100% for the butter prices? Isn't there any authority that oversees unfair market manipulation? Butter prices must be the highest in the world here and the quality isn't all that fantastic. GRRR.

Sham shame Japan ! Creating bogus and artificial demand, for a readily available product, should be a criminal offense ! I'll not be supporting the Hokkaido butter farms at all ! Too bad there is no market watchdog in Japan like other "advanced" nations- this simply wouldn't be tolerated ! But then again this is, Japan !
