Egg prices to be raised in August
TOKYO —
Japan’s largest egg distributor Zen-Noh Tamago Co will raise wholesale prices of eggs for supply to supermarkets and other mass retailers on Aug 1, according to informed sources.
Egg prices, which have remained stable for years, will finally be raised reflecting higher production costs caused by price hikes of feed grains including corns.
The price hike will cover high value-added products for which wholesale prices are fixed for a certain period. The Tokyo-based company will raise prices by about 30 yen per pack of 10 eggs.
The retail price of the company’s high-quality egg brand “Shintamago,” currently set at around 300 yen per pack, will be raised by some 10% if the wholesale price increase is fully passed on.

Fryings eggs may be easy. Costlier eggs up by 10 percent, at 33 yen at piece. Japan's cost of living up, but exports are not keeping up with cost of living. Japan should declare war on inflation. Reduce demand for eggs by 10 percent and reduce cholesterol.

Zen - I've never seen a pack of 8 eggs. They're always in packs of 10 around here...

I was at Shop 99, they recently started replacing stock with a new supplier(VL Lawson).
But, yes, 6 and 10 packs seem to be the norm, with the occasional 4 egg pack.

hmmmm I wonder how this is going to affect the "spend 1050 yen and get a pack of eggs for 1 yen" deal at some places.. I haven't paid more than 1 yen for a pack of eggs for years.

Solution, just keep a live chicken in the house just like that crazy Japanese comedian on that show where celebrities have to live for a month on only 10,000 Yen...

Let the egg wars begin! Watch how stores will overload on eggs to get more housewives buying them!

"just keep a live chicken in the house"
That one made me cluck!
Leon - You mean you haven't paid more than 1,050 yen for a pack of eggs and some other stuff for years. Hee hee!

Reason shown “price hikes of feed grains including corns”.( This is the key words.) They can import feed grains un cheeper price from Bangladesh and can bring down the production cost. Regards,

Eggs are so delicious

Cheap eggs are factory-farmed. Quite likely the hens are also fed hormones to increase production, which means if you're eating cheap eggs you're probably ingesting serious amounts of chicken sex hormones.
Cluck.

and will the finance minister still deny inflation?

i wonder if the new marketing ploy will target housewives to get them to stock up before the hike, figuring they won't know that eggs have an expiration date

Egg prices today are still the same as half a century ago. A moderate price increase won't hurt the consumer much.

"corns" how many types of corn are there? One egg of a story. Easter eggs soon will be too expensive for the Easter Bunny.

Cleo - "chicken sex hormones"
Then if I eat a bunch of eggs I should be able to dance like Mick Jagger!
eleewhm - You had better start shopping around a little more for your eggs. 260 yen for 6 eggs? Heck, I don't pay more than 170 yen for 10.

Sarge -
Eating cheap eggs is not something you'd want to brag about. It's low-quality, cruel food. Go free-range.

Cleo - Where can I buy free-range eggs and how much are they? I'm afraid they're going to bust my budget...

Sarge - My local Nokyo has them for 350 for a pack of 10. Almost half as big again as the weeny factory-raised ones, with shells you need a sledgehammer to crack. Healthy eggs from healthy hens. :-)

Cleo- Thanks, I'm now in the process of finding out where my local Nokyo is. None of the supermarkets or yaoyasans around here have free-range eggs...

Sarge, if you can't get real free-range (becoming rarer in this age of bird flu) then 平飼い(from hens kept in an open-plan shed, not cages) is an improvement on the nasty factory-farmed eggs. The price is probably about the same as free-range. Ditto fertile eggs, though when I buy those I'm always afraid there might be a baby bird inside....(so far there hasn't been)
