FamilyMart starts over-the-counter drug sales

TOKYO —

Major Japanese convenience store operator FamilyMart Co said Wednesday that it has started trial sales of over-the-counter drugs such as cold remedies and gastrointestinal drugs.

Sales began the same day at a directly run outlet in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward and will start next Monday at an outlet in Toshima Ward, the company said. A total of six pharmacists will be in place at the two stores.

The move comes as regulations on OTC drug sales will be eased under the nation’s revised pharmaceutical law that is slated to come into force in fiscal 2009 starting next April.

Through the trial sales, FamilyMart intends to collect data on customer demand and obtain drug sales know-how.

The company expects that daily drug sales will total 10,000 to 20,000 yen at each of the two outlets.
