Fashion concept store Clemens en August to visit Tokyo for first time

The world’s most unique touring concept store, Munich-based Clemens en August, is heading to Tokyo for the first time. Known for offering chic, minimalist luxury for men and women, Clemens en August is a favorite of celebrities such as Claudia Schiffer, Emily Blunt, Daniel Craig, Franz Ferdinand and James McAvoy.

Clemens en August is not stocked anywhere in the world. Instead it is sold on tour, in season, twice a year in contemporary art galleries and museums in carefully selected cities around the world.

The history of Clemens en August dates back 160 years, when Clemens and August Brenninkmeijer traveled the Dutch countryside by foot, selling high quality fabrics to wealthy landowners who didn’t have time to go into the cities themselves. It is in this tradition that the designer, Dutch-born, ex-Kostas Murkudis business partner Alexander Brenninkmeijer pays homage to his ancestors with his brand Clemens en August.

Inspiration for the Clemens en August Autumn/Winter 08 collection comes from the volume and functionality of the life vest. For men, wool/cashmere checks, tweeds and corduroy are worked into coats and sports jackets, with voluminous detachable quilted lapels and collars on suits, shirts and jersey tees. Volume also features in the women’s collection, with the same fabric themes. A loose fitting silk draped dress is teamed with a tuxedo jacket in contrasting black velvet and silk, taken further in an elegant long velvet tuxedo evening coat. The reference to the life vest recurs in silk, cotton and jersey dresses featuring re-worked life vest clips as fasteners.

Clemens en August will be at Zel Gallery in Roppongi (5-10-25 Roppongi, Tel: 03-3470-3347) from Oct 23-26, 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.
