Takata! What's the deal?! Where's your made-for-TV bow and apology?!

A collapsible issue with the Takata airbags?

This story has been running like wildfire in the US but it yet to hit the Japanese mainstrain print and TV media. A cursury search of the Nikkei morning edition could fing no mention! Shades of Olympus....

The "expansion" is actually a correction. Apparently they left models off the October 20 press release and the October 21 press release corrected the omissions.

Note: The list below corrects the list that accompanied our October 20 advisory, which incorrectly included certain vehicles. The numbers cited for potentially affected vehicles below are subject to change and adjustment because there may be cases of vehicles being counted more than once.

The number of potentially affected vehicles now stands at:

Honda 5,051,364 Toyota 877,000 Nissan 694,626 BMW 627,615 Chrysler 371,309 Mazda 64,872 Ford 58,669 Subaru 17,516 Mitsubishi 11,985 GM (indeterminate number of 2003 – 2005 Pontiac Vibe and 2005 - Present Saab 9-2X vehicles)

Statistically. Its more life threatening going to fix the airbag and get killed in any way(accident, gunshot, etc). than to stay at home and forget about the airbag issue.

Very odd rationale. Suppose your child's stroller had a potentially life-threatening fault, but you refused to go and get it fixed because "I could get bombed by a terrorist on the way there."

@Tessa

For any recall, the rate at which cars are actually fixed can be low. Many cars are included in varieties of earlier recalls that are not fixed. Most of people that purchase a car second-hand have no knowledge of the airbag’s status or other recall repairs. There is no law stipulating that a used car have any recall repairs made before it is sold again. Most likely more rupture cases could be going unnoticed, or underreported, leaving affected cars on the road.

Tessa. 2.5 million airbags and 2 deaths. Imagine how many people will die going to the service shop. Or how many will die because the lower quality installing the replacement. I have seen 25yo car with deployed airbags(cabin heat). Oh and they are not recalling those 25yo airbags. Even better. How many will suffer heartstroke in the waiting room. Sky is the limit.

I wouldn't take this problem lightly. Takata airbags is blamed for close to 140 injuries, including approximately 40 people who reported airbags that exploded. Airbags made by Takata, have been one of the biggest and longest-simmering problems.

As far as I'm concerned. people start to file claims when they see the oportunity of suing someone. This is just like the floor mats recall. How many time did my Renault sudden accelerated? 3 times. Yes 3. Yet there was never a recall. What about my 2007 hyundai i10 that with a locking rear wheel. Nobody recalled it cause they dont sell that much. Or doesnt sell in the USA
