lucky fish - time to restock! Now if we can get the whalers to go on strike too then that would be a result!
thedeath at 10:03 AM JST - 16th July
no, whalers got everything they need from j-gov. they are unlikely getting hurt by the energy price.

Japanese overfish anyway, why dont people try something different.
serindipity at 11:13 AM JST - 16th July
This so inevitable. The fish stocks have never been regulated. There have never been any size or bag limits for fisherman. And now, they can't catch enough fish. I fail to see what a strike is going to achieve. There are so many millions of tons of illegally caught fish go through the markets and it's still not enough. The Japanese fishermen have spent the last 5 centuries taking everything they could from the oceans around Japan with no forethought or guilt. Now, they have nothing left. I guess all the Japanese people are gonna have to start acquiring a taste for giant jelly fish.

If the fishing industry can't make money they should abandon it and grow vegetables or rice instead. I really hope the government doesn't subsidise petrol for them. That would be really dumb; propping up a dying industry.

The Japanese fishing industry is the most irresponsible on the planet. They've been over fishing, poaching, stealing fish stocks from foreign waters for far too long. Now when they are left with very little to catch they want to mouth off. Let them eat portuguese-man-o-wars for their sushi breakfasts.

boonme.
Look into the over-fishing that happens in seas close to europe, australia, americas, etc. Some areas over-fish by DOUBLE to TRIPLE the legal limit.
Yes, granted a LOT of those over-fishing ends up in Japan, sold to make the guys doing the over-fishing richer.

Well, let the prices go up and the market decides.
Altria at 01:15 PM JST - 16th July
What's this got to do with the price of fish?
thedesertfox at 01:34 PM JST - 16th July
Altria -- Just two words to explain what this has to do with the price of fish: Supply and demand.

In a way I hope things go through the roof. People here need to get a "set" and start demanding lower prices for everything including gas.
natosucks at 05:54 PM JST - 16th July
Oh please!, the fishermen's in Japan are the most rich people in the world!(if you compares with others fishermen's for example in america) Is easy money!,the sea is open and the fishes are 4 free:)

Yeah, the free ride, the pillaging of the oceans and the easy income that goes with it has to end some time. High fuel prices may be the trigger. Subsidizing the industry is not the answer. Regulation, setting quota, might be useful over supply & demand as that could help sustain the species.
