Ford and Toyota can design new generations of hybrids but the problem for both F-150 and Tundra is the weight of the vehicle. If they can make new generation of trucks with unitized lightweight carbon fiber material instead of current body and frame design, this alone would save alot of weight. Also, improvement in aerodynamics and making truck design lower, which improves the wind resistance. The new design in 7 speed automatic transmission that has the higher final drive ratio, which improves accelation and fuel milage, and all aluminum engine would save additional weight.

The problem with Toyota truck was that it was under-powered. So a hybrid truck has to be able to haul first and foremost - that's what you buy a truck for.

Totally agree, most Toyota's are underpowered and dont make good tow vehicles. And hybrid Toyota's are totally worthless if you are towing heavy items or long distances. Total waste of time and money developing them unless they address the power issues.

I have to laugh at this. Do you know anything about the Toyota full size trucks? Toyota has optional 5.7 litre, 385 hp V8, and if your pulling anything, you can pull 7,000-8,000 pounds of anything. Underpowered?

sfjp330,
If you actually care to read the post you are commenting on you will see that l said MOST, by definition that means most not all. I do realise they have an optional engine for one of their vehicles. This is why l said MOST as opposed to all. Understand!
My point was actually that standard ford (large sedans manufactured in Australia) have a towing capacity of around 5000 pounds with standard engine. While a similar sized Toyota has a 1000 pound towing capacity. You need to buy a FJ cruiser, or Land cruiser to equal or better the towing capacity of the standard ford sedan. This is my point so to buy a standard Toyota and use for towing, yes its underpowered. Maybe before laughing you should read and do some research.

I am still laughing. The standard 4 cylinder Ranger has similar towing to Toyota 4 cylinder Tacoma trucks. The standard Ford F-150 V-6 3.7 engine trucks have similar towing to Tundra V'6. They both have V8's have similar towing. So there is no difference to Ford and Toyota of the range of trucks, depending on how much you need to tow.

The compact Ford Ranger 4 cylinder truck has 3500 towing capability and Toyota 4 cylinder truck has also 3500 towing capability. How did you get similar Toyota with 1000 pound towing capacity? This article is about trucks. Are you that lost?
