according to nytimes, if this deal ever finally is settled, expect major restructuring in sharp JP.

As should happen - they screwed up their own company. Leaving it as-is would be irresponsible - the people running it have already shown incompetence. Letting them to keep doing things the same way would be more incompetence.

Good outcome. Sharp saved despite having hidden serious potential losses until the last possible minute. Very amateurish behaviour unbecoming of a serious company. Anyway good luck.

Foxconn had better set up the suicide nets for the Sharp board members, like they do at dormitories for their employees who make Apple products...

Sharp needs a major overhaul across the board in their business operations. Outdated, outmoded business models and way of thinking from the geezers who are in charge. That's why they've been in the red. Fortunately (or unfortunately), there's Hon Hai to try to save their business, if this deal eventually pushes through.

Smaller Japanese electronics brands including Sansui, Nakamichi and Akai also have been purchased by foreign buyers.

Can't help but feel some nostalgia hearing these names as they were popular stereo system brands in the 80s and 90s. Other Japanese companies could've learned from their mistakes on why they failed and perhaps avoided being in the same situation, but changing deeply ingrained corporate mindsets in Japanese companies is like hoping for a leopard to change its spots.

More like getting a company like Kodak to recognize that the future is digital and not chemical.

Japanese need to get used to seeing more of their companies getting taken over by Chinese interests. With their aging population and falling domestic demands, they better get used to more of this type of news.

first to go is huge number of unproductive workers, Sharp management can put the blame on the evil gaijin takeover company. then pay workers according to there skills not the age. Then much of the production needs to be done in taiwan were the wages are cheaper and so Sharp can sell its products at competitive prices. Sharps TVs are world leading its just the prices are too high and people tend to go for the cheaper Samsung LG equivalent

wtfjapan

Not true at All- LG Tvs blast sharps out of the water

Honhai is going to gut Sharp for its patents/ industrial know-how, pass it on to its manufacturers in China, and cast Sharp aside. Sharp execs will get a ton of money (they would've been fired if the Japanese government bought it), and the workers will be cut.

Sharp selling is a good step, though came little late, there will be other companies on waiting list to be sold as well.Sharp selling is just a green light"let it go".I totally believe its the right decision.

Not true at all, if you check the prices on Best Buy and other US retailers, it's the Korean brands that are pricier than the Japanese. Not only price, but Consumer Reports and other reviewers consistently give higher marks for quality to Sammy and LG over the Japanese brands. It's that only in Japan, people don't know this.

papi2013 - foxconn is taiwanese run and owned not chinese. yes theres a big difference.

It's that only in Japan, people don't know this.

Thanks to the protective market and consumers locking that made the glorious days of the all the Japanese INC....hopefully, thing and people are changing and we start to see good quality foreign product being, also, available in Japan.

Bad news for HonHai who was hoping that they could use Sharpe's LCD production to woe Apple into buying their LCD panels.

Apple is moving away from LCD technology, and is rumoured to be moving into OLED displays by 2017.

This is a huge gamble for HonHai buying outdated LCD technology. Even Forbes says the writing is on the wall for LCD panels.
