Hey, and to think some people thought America could make cars! :-)

"Hummer is a strong global niche brand"

Yes, there are still quite a few people who love to waste gasoline.

this is the beginning of the end for the non-chinese auto industry. The moment they figure out how to reverse engineer all that tech, then its gonna be mass production... For now Chinese automakers are focused on the domestic market, which has extremely high growth, but very soon they will be pointing their cannons at US and Europe.

Why are the Chinese interested in producing gas guzzlers anyway?

to make an engine that complies with US and European emmissions standards, to make a transmission guaranteed to work for 100,000 miles, and to make all the other highly complex and technical equipment has been impossible for the Chinese until now.

All Chinese cars made in China until recently had been made with purposely older-generation engines and transmissions, which had been supplied by German and Japanese manufacturers. In this case, they should be getting the actual designs of how to make them. This is of incredible value, because they can use this knowledge to make other kinds of engines.

I have been to showrooms in China where you need to put paper underneath the car because it's ALREADY leaking oil. And the doors don't even close squarely, etc. To go from that to technology that can compete with today's Japanese, Euro and US designs is a huge leap, but is becoming possible every day.

Will be interesting seeing Hummers on the road with stickers such as "Built with Pride in the People's Republic."

Hummers uses the same small block chevy engines, which is OHV, 2 valve per cyliner, that is been around since 1955, but it's a larger 5.3 and 6.2 engine. The older Hummer used THC400 (turbo-hydro 400) and new ones use the 6 speed auto, the same one that GM V8 trucks and Ford truck with 5.4 currently uses. They also use smaller 3.7 5 cylinder engine which is not popular. China is getting a technology that is recent but not up to date.

Do they get to supply the US armed forces as a result?
