TOKYO —
Tanaka Kikinzoku Jewelry KK has put on sale Chinese tableware made of pure gold for 100 million yen per set. The company hopes that the products will be used as gifts for the elderly to mark Respect-for-the-Aged Day on Sept 15, a spokesman said, citing ancient Chinese tradition that says those who eat off gold tableware will have eternal youth and life.
One set includes 31 pieces, such as large dishes that are hand-carved and sport pictures of dragons, symbols of immortality. The items are available as single purchases, with spoons priced at 650,000 yen each and soup bowls going for 32 million yen.
