I have no idea if this will make any difference in Japan's smoking culture in the long run, but on a pretty basic moral level, I think it's good that the federal government is getting rid of at least some of its stake in a company whose primary product is carcinogenic.

Lets hope this means the clear and obvious conflict of interest is reduced and they finally start bringing Japan into line with almost every other first world country in the world.

This can only be seen as a good thing! Japan's government is too involved with the business sector as it is.

What an interesting story. Selling 1/3 of the government share in death dealing cancer sticks to help disaster victims because most of donations went, oh gee, somewhere else.
Will this make it easier to pass legislation banning all smoking in all public places like other major countries such as Russia, France, etc.? Oh, I so hope so.
For now, I wish every establishment that allowed smoking had a big fat sticker on their door so I could avoid them at all cost.
JT should be getting ready to diversify and get out of the market here in Japan. Shame on them.

And shame on the Japanese government (reduced by 1/3) for promoting the ill health and early death of its citizens!

NZ 2011, you mean make Japan an over-burdened and jobless welfare state like the US, EU, UK, or Canada?
