    Go ahead use public funds no serious consequences except that internal debt will go up by few billion yen and future generation will be there to take care of it. on a side note: I seldom fly by JAL.

    I don't hear you touting the alternative though some14some. You'd be happy to let a massive company go under and leave Japan with less airlines than Australia? The fact that tens of thousands of jobs would be lost along with billions in revenue doesn't matter at all?

    The jobs won't be lost, other airlines will take up the slack. JAL has been greatly mismanaged, to the tune of a few billion dollars. There are a lot of JAL retirees who collect very nice pensions... they've refused to take a cut and I guess have the political clout to let the taxpayers pick up the slack.

    Another market failure that government must correct. If JAL went out of business all of Japan's transportation system would go haywire. However, the government needs to put people in place who can restructure the company without interference.

    Many useless airports need to be closed.

    So essentially I was right when I said nationalize JAL. JAL is the defacto national airline of Japan and shouldn't be allowed to go under. On a personal note when I fly back to Chicago I don't want to have to take American or Northworst.

    You mean "fewer" airlines.

    The jobs would not be lost. They would be reallocated to more productive industries. This is the capitalist system. If billions in revenue were there to be lost, JAL wouldn't be in this mess.

    The government will run JAL into the ground, no pun intended. Yes, the government has debt, but only 10% is owed to foreign creditors. They would just take money from one pocket and put it in another.

    I always laugh at these kind of stories as it leads some people to think that the govn't could run these firms better....we all know how efficient the civil service can be! yeah right!
