The government will never say the tax hike was a mistake. Even if the economy tanks, as in 1997.

So expect a string of reports like this downplaying the damaging effects of the hike, which was a political rather than an economic move.

This is the result of the failed economic logic of Abenomics, the success of which, relies on increased consumer spending, but they did nothing to ensure corporations would pass on their tax cuts to consumers so they could spend more. This is only the beginning of a downward spiral that can only result in a complete economic failure.

Japan’s government turned slightly more cautious about factory output and flagged a risk that April’s sales-tax hike could have prolonged effects, a sign that the world’s third-biggest economy is struggling with the higher tax and further stimulus might be warranted.

My gosh, I was just debating here on JT with another poster about the effectiveness of Abenomics, and whether it could be called a success. Guess now even the government agrees that it is still way too early to judge.

Agreed, world is going to turn upside down because of Abenomics. Please upvote me since I make conjectures without rhyme or reason, but take the side that's against Abe.
