H.I.S. reports net income up 146%

TOKYO —

H.I.S. Co. Ltd, a leading travel and airline ticket agency, has announced results for the first half ended April 30, 2011. Consolidated net sales increased 14.1% year-on-year to 175,923 million yen, consolidated operating income rose 44.6% to 3,415 million yen, ordinary income rose 117.7% year-on-year to 4,343 million yen and net income also rose 146.0% year-on-year to 4,571 million yen.

Within the travel industry, demand for overseas travel has been on an uptrend, supported by the expansion of international routes from Haneda Airport in October 2010 and the continuing rise in the yen. However, according to the Japan National Tourist Organization (JNTO), the estimated number of Japanese departing the country from November 2010 through April 2011 is expected to have fallen by 0.4% on the previous year to around 7,855,000 people, a decrease of approximately 35,000 people due to the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Must have been all the tickets purchased by "flyjin" that boosted their profits!

    ironchef

Yep but unfortunately many of those flyjin came back after only caring about their own safety first. Awesome people!

Not sure what to make of JNTO's numbers. Are they saying that overseas travel fell dramatically after the earthquake? Because HIS's results sound pretty impressive even though they are mostly pre-earthquake and backward looking.

ironchef- were foreigners expected to invite their neighbors and colleages back to their home countries?

HIS? Doubt many of those who had the foresight to have an emergency fund put away somewhere or the earning power / strength to leave for their and theirs as a precaution would use a tour operator like HIS, takes days to process. No, those sensible people who got out for safety would have rolled up to the flight desks and slapped down their money and said, 'Next flight please". Good on us --Japanese and non-Japanese alike-- for making sure we and ours were safe. Beautiful stress free luxury.

Record profits- OK. Now lets make the flights cheaper and affordable for consumers please.

Good lord, for once I agree with YingYang. I think a lot of the puffed chest talk from the likes of ironchef is only cause they didnt have the financial means to leave. HIS or otherwise.

That company baits and steals. They never let you see the computer screen as they go directly to airline sites, book tickets for you, and then add a ¥5000 fee on to it. I have tested them out. If you minus ¥5000 from what they quote you, then go to the airline site they say they booked you on, you can save yourself the ¥5000 by doing it yourself.

legs, it they are only making Y5000 per ticket wud be a pretty crappy bizness to be in!

That's not stealing, it's how business works. You think the milk you buy at the supermarket costs you the same as the supermarket paid for it? If HIS didn't add on a fee, then it would be a free service, and its empoyees would have to be volunteer workers.

"If HIS didn't add on a fee, then it would be a free service, and its employees would have to be volunteer workers"

    Say, that's a great idea!

Seriously though, last time I bought an airline ticket, H.I.S. was nearly twice the price of one of their competitors. I was rather shocked, I have bought tickets from them quite a few times, as they had always been very competitive price-wise.

Any recommendations? I usually buy direct from Finnair online, but it'd be nice to know which travel agents to look out for.

ironchef - thanks! I usually just go with my intuition a lot of the time and it's always good to get positive feedback! Just remember to keep a couple grand in the ol' bank account no matter what.

ironchef - Don't be too hard on yourself. Just start in on that 2 grand little by little. Maybe hit up your eikaiwa for a raise.
