Geez, next they will be forcing their workers to purchase their overpriced garbage with their reduced pay-checks...oh, wait, they already have!

An extra day off a month or you or a few co-workers get fired.... Hmm, not too hard to figure out which one the workers would go for... I hope alot more companies try various methods to keep everyone employed. I am sure Hitachi is a great company to work for.

Hold on, wasn't Hitachi one of the companies that ordered its employees to go out and buy its products as a sign of faith? So on one hand you have employees buying habits identured to the company, and on the other hand you have the company reducing employee salaries.

timorborder - so far Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toyota are the companies who announced publicly that their employees/ managers must buy their products, though there are others such as Mitsubishi, Nissan and Sanyo who also expect their staff to do the same. This is the first PR from Hitachi ...

It will be unpaid I'm sure, but workers will still be expected to show up for work on their "day-off".

If we would really get the day off I wish my company would introduce the same system irrespective of the financial situation.

The unions should insist that anyone working on their "day off" gets double pay, otherwise people will forced to work for nothing.

for sanity of the people of this nation i pray that you are wrong

Since most of the companies don't pay for your time (this is the official reason why don't pay for overtime), the one day off is OK, but the monthly salary must be the same. :)

  • PepinGalarga at 11:42 AM JST - 10th March

which day do they get off? Sunday?

    Unions? where are we? Detroit?

This temporary measure will save many people from being laid off, but it perpetuates the inefficiencies of the system, by keeping the bloated staffs.
