Honda Motor Co Ltd will release an electric version of the Super Cub motorcycle in 2018.

Since its release in 1958, the Super Cub has been sold across the globe for more than 50 years. The electric version will be released in Japan first, but Honda also plans to launch it in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region.

The current model of the Super Cub is equipped with an engine whose displacement is 50cc, 110cc, etc. It has long been popular especially in Japan and ASEAN countries.

Honda exhibited concept models of the "EV Cub" at Tokyo Motor Show in 2013 and 2015. This time, it showcased the latest concept model, "EV-CUB Concept," at Automotive Engineering Exposition 2016, which last week in Yokohama.

The EV-CUB Concept can be charged from a household outlet and is equipped with a detachable lithium-ion battery. Its dimensions are 1,840 (L) x 670 (W) x 1,015mm (H).

For the release version of the EV Cub, which will debut in 2018, Honda plans to ensure a drive range of at least 50km (approx 31 miles) per charge.

The gasoline-powered models of the Super Cub are representative high-mileage motorbikes. Though many electric motorbikes currently available in the market have a drive range of 20-30km per charge, the company said, "We will inherit the high mileage of the Cub for the electric model."

The Super Cub is probably the most perfect vehicle for short errands and trips that are slightly farther than would be effective for a bicycle as well as reliability and maintenance.

I wish them sincere good luck with the electric version.

Need to have 3 different models of this with maybe 3 different size batteries. = People in Japan use it for commercial purposes and people in Vietnam may try to get 3-4 people on this scooter. The Cub/Super-Cub is the #1 selling personal vehicle ahead of the Volkswagen Beetle.

Looks like a great vehicle, like the original Cub which is legendary.

Scooters, esp. two strokes, can have pretty bad emissions of unburnt fuel and NOx, so it's a good step forward. Having a detachable battery is great because it means you do not need an outlet where you park it. It makes it much easier for people living in mansions etc. Swappable too if you need more range.

There are already electric assist bicycles that sell for under 80,000 yen new, and probably make more sense than owning a Super Cub. Honda could probably sell more units if it equips the model with pedals.

Excellent for mansion dwellers to charge their batteries. Plus you can tap into electric in front of conbini stores. Or even your neighbors outdoor outlets.

As a scooter, you need a licence and insurance to ride one of these. It will also be much faster than an electric assist bicycle, which will be speed limited because people ride those without a licence or insurance.

As long as it moved away riding people from the walk path to the road path, I am fine.

I'm on the waiting list to get one.....!
