This is why a monopoly is bad for markets and the public.

So why hasn't this been bigger news here in Japan? Right...no one killed so far!

Accurate reporting. Unfortunately everyday people around the world die in car accidents. Many countries do not accurately assess exact cause of death. In the USA, right or wrong, cause of death, is very important. Fault is important. You can scoff at all the legal fees, scoff at the large monetary verdicts, but, bottom line, we are holding manufacturers accountable. Its great to have an industry leading company within your borders.... but if within your borders, the Govt and Safety commissions are lax on oversight.... you can thank us. Japanese manufacturers have had it easy because in Japan... suing manufacturers is practically unheard of. Because of that, companies like Takata might skip intensive testing and release a product prematurely. When you think about it... all the deaths caused by Takata airbags are a direct result of Japanese complacency.

I hope that includes my Stepwgn! This company sold over 50 million of these airbags knowing they were faulty and had a potential to cause death or serious injury. What is going on with Japanese companies? Mitsubishi had been falsifying their gasoline consumption test results, so many food and product mislabeling scams, so many companies grafting for contracts, politicians using public funds for their own entertainment, nuclear power companies cooking their books and lying about safety upgrades, construction companies using substandard materials and building specifications and many more. Is there anything honest about Japanese business?

Not only that, they sent 'mystery shoppers' to wreckers all over the US to destroy undeployed Takata air bags in wrecked cars. All in a day's work at Japan Inc.!

Indeed, the silence of the govt, the absence of "official" recall in Japan are as scary as the potential treat of faulty airbag that could explode in your face, i have to concede that without the US, we would have never known about this..

Personally, I think that airbags should be outlawed completely. They add to a vehicle's price, aren't as reliable as some would want to believe (I've worked in the auto-body business and have seen vehicles in which the things should have deployed, but didn't), and when they do deploy, are proving time and again to be injurious if not outright deadly.

Get rid of them. Seatbelts are much more reliable.

My Honda's already had the airbag replaced after the previous recall... I'm in the UK... I can't see them recalling it again.

Why doesn't Honda order its distributors to deactivate Takata made Airbags in all Honda cars? It seems to be all replacement Airbags which do not contain a desiccant and made by Takata. Why only Honda cars were involved in deadly Airbag accident ? There may be something wrong with position of Airbag's Inflator canister because only Honda drivers and Passengers were hurt or died from accidents. I may be wrong but I only read about Honda cars' drivers or passengers were injury and died by metal and plastic shrapnel from the inflator canister of TakaTa's Airbag.
