Hoya to sell Pentax digital camera business to Ricoh
TOKYO —
Hoya Corp and Ricoh signed an agreement on Friday to transfer Hoya’s Pentax imaging systems business (the business of developing, manufacturing and selling optical instruments such as digital cameras and replacement lenses, digital camera accessories, security camera-related products, and binoculars) to Ricoh.
Hoya said it will effectuate the transfer by incorporating a new corporation to succeed the Pentax digital camera business by way of a corporate split and transfer all shares to Ricoh as of Oct 1.
In a statement, the companies said Ricoh would use the Pentax brand name for its digital camera products, while Hoya would continue to use the Pentax brand for products such as endoscopes.

never ending recession might have compelled Hoya for such a sad decision.

This comes the same week that Ricoh announced plans for major employee layoffs. Will the Pentax cameras compete against Ricoh's own line, or supplant them? Ricoh digital cameras have never had success in North America.

If nothing else, this gives Ricoh the chance to sell its cameras under the Pentax name.
@Virtuoso: In the U.S., when people hear the name "Ricoh", we think of copiers.

A professional photographer persuaded me to buy a Ricoh last year. They sell like hot cakes in Japan.
If you think about it, copy machines have to be very good to succeed in today's market.
That technology has gone into their cameras and lenses. I am very satisfied with the quality of the shots I am getting, especially the super close-ups. Go Ricoh! .
