It should be made clear to the retirees that if they won't cooperate JAL will be liquidated and their pensions will fall to zero.

Govt. will back up the pensions, so they will continue to receive them if JAL goes belly up. Selling the whole fleet of planes will more than cover the pensions until everyone is dead.

The law in Japan treats the pension fund as apart from other company assets, so the recipients have first claim on whatever's left if the company goes under.
