****JAL is making good cost cuts in light of energy price stability woes. Many airlines may in, for more big change in management. The airline also may be in for more takeovers, by richer companies/richfunds managers/oil rich countries.****

JAL trains ? couldn't tell from the quality of the pilots

Perhaps this article needs to explain where JAL will be training their 747 pilots in the future. I can see the cost benefit of not flying pilots and instructors to Moses Lake (although JAL does fly to Seattle, which is not that far away) but I don't see in this article where they will be training in the future. Aomori? Miyazaki? Guam? No more training?

Why can't they train their pilots in Japan?

Lack of an accredited flight school for 747 in Japan. The US is, and always has been the gold standard for flight training. The 747's were built in Washington State, having a school near Boeing made sense. They don't make passenger 747's anymore, and JAL is shrinking it's 747 fleet, axing it's 11 inefficient 747-300s in 2009. So far JAL doesn't have any interest in buying the next generation 747i that's due out in a few years. It's not surprising they are shutting down the program.

    Betting,

Alot of the Japanese airline training takes place at Shimojishima Airport located in Okinawa.

Possibly Clark field in Luzon Philippines. Many airlines are already building major supply and training centers there.
