JAL to hike fuel surcharge from Aug to Sept
TOKYO —
Japan Airlines (JAL) on Monday requested approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to increase the current level of fuel surcharge on all international passenger tickets issued between Aug 1 and Sept 30. In April, JAL began setting fuel surcharge levels bimonthly based on the 2-month average price, instead of quarterly based on 3-month average price, of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel.
The price of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel during the two month period of April and May 2011 averaged $132.66 per barrel. With reference to the fuel surcharge benchmark list for the fiscal year of 2011, this corresponds to Zone H of fuel surcharges which range from 3,000 yen on a Japan-Korea ticket to 29,000 yen on a Japan-U.S. ticket per person per sector flown, on tickets purchased in Japan.
This level of surcharge will be applied to all international passenger tickets issued between Aug 1 and Sept 30.

One of the reasons why JAL went bankrupt...anyway, ministry will approve it, i am least worried since i am not JAL passenger nor do i plan to travel in Aug-Sept.

@ some14some: Exactly. Why not just make an ad that reads "Fly with some other carrier, you can't afford us!"
Buh-bye JAL.

Sure seems odd that it matches with the Japanese summer holidays.

Always matches the holiday season. I have an idea, sell the ticket for the price you want and don't tell us about such charges because it only upsets us! Funny how it seems to be only JAL needing the increase. I don't recall prices dropping with this either!

I'm sure ANA will come up with the exact same surcharge before long. It's strange that different airlines seem to pay exactly the same for their fuel. You would think they would buy hedges to avoid large fluctuations in fuel prices, but any increases are immediately passed on to passengers.
And why is there no surcharge on domestic flights?

if I didn't use Korean Air to fly to and from Hawaii, I MIGHT be bummed about this.

Matches the summer holidays... it happens everywhere, even the gas stations jack their prices, the governments needs to crack down on this... oh wait they are too busy trying to out the PM to worry about anything in reality.

the problem is that while they call it a "fuel" surcharge, there is no reasonable relation to the amount of fuel used for a particular flight. the fuel surcharge to hawaii, a 7 hour flight, is the same or more than the charge to europe, an 11 hour flight. how is that?

Ridiculous game here. Gas prices jack up in the US during the summer season too.

Sometimes, "surcharge" can mean "overcharge".
