JAL thinking for itself, I think not. Obviously the head-shed down at JAL have been called down to the ministry and told to get their act together, if at all possible without the intervention of foreign capital. This whole issue is a long way from being finished and it will get rather interesting before the dust settles.

Partnering with AA or Delta would have required JAL to confirm their value proposition in any case. Looks like the media has jumped the gun on the process.

Wouldn't want all that mismanagement and all those shady financial dealings to be discovered by foreign investors huh? Bye Bye JAL!

Maybe this was their tactic all along. Approach foreigners for capital, then go to the Japanese government and say "Look, if we do not help us, we will be under foreign control" :P This should be quite effective in Japan.

Let them sink or swim on their own. Why should taxpayers have to carry the burden of this carrier? Free economies and free enterprise are at work. Let them figure things out on their own. The government has enough problems to worry about without having to get involved with JAL just because it was a former flagship carrier.
