Brainiac is right, but i would like to make one correction i.e. a passenger instead of passengers.

Why doesn't Japan swallow its pride and make ANA the flag carrier? As it is JAL is Japan's flagging carrier

    >I am very sad for this company. This company was number 1 five years ago. I mean JAL counter in Narita was at least 1000 or 2000 people standing in line for the JAL counter. Last Summer 09, 00 number of people waiting in line. I cry in my sleep for this company every night. When I was at narita in august I seen one of these ex-JAL check in counter lady at the american airlines counter. She was rude and very annoying. I could tell she used to work for JAL. Here demeanor was rude and stupid. She had a fake attitude & smile at the E ticket counter. I can tell she was not happy with her job and giving me bad customer service.

By 2015! Not in any big hurry are they. Sounds like lots of generous early retirement packages paid for by the tax payer. Bad management! Let them fail and let ANA take them over.

Thank god I don't work for them. I'm gonna have myself a drink tonight.

They need to make the cuts by the end of this year. It's nonsense to have a six year business plan when you might be bankrupt within one year.

JAL Hotels are building hotels in Vietnam and India. Divest ALL hotel interests. Get out of vertical integration mode and focus on flights. The shareholders should never have allowed this empire building. They have many Great Circle routes and are prime candidates for the Haneda and Kansai upgrade slots.

    Hi Folks

Do you really think ANA can step into JAL's shoes ? The only reason the heat is off ANA is because JAL is in such dire straits

ANA is losing money too big time

Ask an ANA insider if they have ever made a profit on purely their International routes or check out their annual report

ANA is lucky they have the cash cow domestic routes to prop up the international operation

Also it was either a stroke of genius or a stroke of luck that they got into the Star Alliance early and are reaping the benefits of having Lufthansa on their side

ANA are lucky too that Japanese businessmen are loyal to the brand as they would not get such great service anywhere else (try asking a flight attendant of a European or American Airline to put your bag in the over-head locker)

ANA is a ticking time bomb massively high labour costs and a pathological resistance to getting the unions in the real world

ANA is always the airline with 10 people at the boarding gate when everybody else makes do with 2 or 3

I wish them luck I think they are going to need it

Does the Japanese government actually have enough funds to bail out JAL?

  • BTADT at 01:48 AM JST - 26th October

I will take the helm. Including yet not limited to all aspects of their operations. That needed to happen years ago with their on going quality assurance issues in maintenance, let alone the administration blunders. Complaints of a bad economy and fuel prices are one thing, but it is really sad to see an airline that was once considered to be one of the finest in the world, fall due to a lack of diligence.

I doubt JAL or any other Japanese carrier will be flying in blue skies in the next five years. ANA may be in a slight better situation than JAL, but they are not up to open competition from US, European or other Southeastern carriers such as Singapore or Thai Airlines. A fresh example is ANA and JAL reluctance of purchasing Airbus crafts, even if they are more modern, economic or simply bigger than most Boeing´s. JAL is having its bubble burst and in the end it hardly will be the powerhouse it was once.

JAL is crap! Yes, long, long ago it was a very nice airline, but we can thank their owners for focusing on giving more perks to their share holders, CEO etc..and treating their flight attendants, pilots etc..like dirt hence their workers treat their customers like dirt and then we all treat JAL like dirt, tisk, tisk, tisk! Maybe an Indian or Chinese super rich businessman will step in and buy it out?

  • marushka at 08:51 PM JST - 26th October

Same reminds me the story of Swissair ( now swiss), very bad management, totally wrong investments etc. the sad thing is that by the end normal people are suffering, their jobs are slashed etc..

  • usaexpat at 11:30 PM JST - 26th October

So what's Japan's unemployment rate adjusted for government lies, 2%? Bad day for JAL employees, let's hope they don't cut so deep that they end up with the safety record and customer service of an American carrier.
