The unemployment rate climbed to 5.2%, reversing an improvement to 5.1% in October. The result marks the first increase since July and misses Kyodo News agency’s average market forecast of 5.2%.

    Huh?

To approximate Western conceptions of unemployment, take the official J-numbers and multiply by two.

http://bit.ly/7v99GB --According to Koji Taira. He vindicates your assessment.

Isn't it classic!!! Associated Press says 5.2%, but anonymous nobody Stirfry thinks (wishes) to know it better and says "No way" "9-10%". Stirfry gives a prime example of optimum wishful thinking. Really rich!!!!

Nothing is classic if one thinks of 3.3M jobless (homeless included) and 30,000+ suicides a year - all according to official data.

    "prices fall"

    That's good for the jobless.

It's a well know fact that you have to at least double the japanese unemployment figures before you can compare them to international standards. Didn't ya know that roomtemperature old mate??

    roomtemperature

WMD, you're right. I didn't know that. Now we're at it...that "well-know fact" you're talking about. If it's that well-known, as you say, I guess you wouldn't find it too much of a trouble to tell me where that fact comes from. Or at least give me some evidence that this fact is well-known. If you say A, you have to say B as well. Didn't you know that WMD??

some14some, ever heard of "calculator"? Look it up, look at your last post again and you'll know why I asked you this question. Classic indeed!!

roomtemperature, there seems some misunderstanding on your part, my post is independent and not in reply to/or refering to others comments.

some14some, independent or not. That's not really relevant. I just referred to the figures you mentioned in that post. No misunderstanding on my part, but a grave calculation mistake on your part.

roomtemperature: why i need to use a calculator when all the data are available in the article itself... 1.the number of jobless rose more than 29% from a year earlier to 3.3 million. 2. separate thread saying: Suicides in Japan top 30,000 for 12th consecutive year. It's Christmas Evening get your party going...!

Last week, Japan’s central bank issued its strongest language thus far on deflation, saying it would not tolerate continued price declines.

Easily fixed. Print lots more money and distribute it to the public in the form of vouchers, so they have to use it buy stuff or lose it.

    From http://bit.ly/7v99GB

"A study by Koji Taira in July 1983, revealed the fact that if Japanese unemployment rates were adjusted to US concepts, the actual rate would be twice that of the United States of America."

Not sure if there has been a follow up study.

Depends whether you consider "employed" to be waving a light stick outside a shopping centre car park.
