It is just this type of deficit that masks much of American factory production.

blame china, taiwan, south korea. japan has to go into new industry or the government has to start passing protectionist laws.

sunhawk: China is Japan's biggest trading partner & being an export driven-economy, Japan would be shooting themselves in the head if they adopted protectionist trade measures against China. Japan should start shifting production away from industries that compete with countries where cheap labor is abundant & move into sectors such as green technology & renewable energy systems that will wean them & others away from nuclear & fossil fuels.

Shouldn't depend too much on exports but rather domestic consumption. And should put more emphasis, not on countries where its surplus took a dive but still has surplus, but on countries where it has large deficits - and reduce those deficits.
