And this is the problem with messing around with the currency value. Sure it pushes exports up, but Japan is too reliant on other countries for everything from food to fuel, and in the end Japan ends up losing rather than gaining.

Problem is Japan can not buy from other countries forever. We need to keep our own industry up. Once we start to export again things will be better.

Ahh, that explains the strange headline. I guarantee Japan's trade deficit was MUCH worse in 1946.
