When a nation works for several generations to build infrastructure, including healthcare, postal services, road and rail etc, NO government has the right to sell these national assets to the private sector.

The first thing the private sector does is to cut corners, fire excess staff put up prices and add their profit margin all to pay for the lovely shareholders who sit at home all day long and do NOTHING to add value or labour to the company. You only have to look at a balance sheet to see that Shareholders appear on the liability side to know what I'm talking about.

But then the politicians will be able to retire from the fees received from the investment bankers and underwriters who put the deal together.

It will do nothing for the average Japanese person.

Is firing excess staff such unthinkable behaviour?

Don't you wonder who is paying for the excess staff, as it is?

Replace someone who is doing something with someone who does nothing, yeah right. Precious shareholders.

People who don't want to see it sold off by the government should take the chance / risk to become shareholders of it themselves.

I'm happy to see the government sell off this organization. I find their product offerings and services to be (generally) exceedingly poor. There's better things my taxes could be spent on.

Seriously, any company that can afford to pay dividends to shareholders who do not contribute anything to the company is either (1) ripping off its employees, (2)ripping off its customers or (3)ripping off its suppliers most likely a combination of all three. I would call that inefficiency.

Shareholders by definition contribute to the company. It is not free, nor risk-free, to become a shareholder.

Yes, because doing "something" is inherently good, and shareholders who give money to companies in the hope that they will put the money to efficient work are inherently bad. Precious workers.

Yeah, it's that simple. Yup. You should read a book on how equities work. Back to the children's table, kiddo.

Seriously? Somebody who thinks shareholders "give money to companies in the hope that they will put the money to efficient work" has the cheek to refer to another poster as '"kiddo"? Priceless

^then please do educate us all. What is the purpose of investing?

@cardsfan - You don't really expect me bother to answer that do you, "kiddo"?

Guy, thank you for sparing us.

cardsfan5, it's amazing isn't it. Work for a company that pays you money... Save some of your salary, and invest it, becoming a shareholder oneself... And somehow as a worker supposed to feel aggrieved because the bastard shareholders actually get something back for risking the money, rather than keeping it in the bank doing sweet f all for anyone.

The North Korean hackers must have infiltrated JT?

C'mon now, you are undoubtedly smarter than me. It would hardly be fair for you to hoard all of that knowledge to yourself.

All this time I was investing money in companies believing they could put my money to better use than a bank. Apparently I got it all wrong. Please educate me, I'm such a hapless idiot!!!!

If you want to trade stocks in a stock market then fine. Let them be zero coupon. (No dividends) Buy or sell thats it. If you want to get something for nothing why should you not risk everything?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Buying and selling is ok, but receiving dividends is not, is it. All the short term speculators will be happy to hear that.

There are plenty of stocks that don't pay dividends, I understand.

A stock that goes ex-dividend tends to go down in value too, I believe.

Not sure what the big deal or difference is to be honest.

Something for nothin? What are you talking about? When i invest in a stock, i stand to lose everything! Why should i not be able to get a piece of the company's earnings?
